Edible mushroom production is a sustainable strategy for valorizing lignocellulosic residues while generating high-value nutritional products. This study evaluated bamboo (Bambusa oldhamii) leaf residues as a substrate for Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation, using maize (Zea mays) stover as a conventional control. The experiment was conducted in Remudadero, Comala, Colima, Mexico. Primordia emergence time, harvest initiation, and biological efficiency were assessed. The bamboo substrate showed a shorter primordia emergence time (18.2 ± 1.3 days) and earlier harvest compared to maize, with significant differences (p ≤ 0.05). Biological efficiency reached 39.5% in bamboo and 48.5% in maize. These findings indicate that bamboo leaves are a viable alternative substrate, enabling shorter production cycles despite slightly lower yields. Their use represents a sustainable strategy to valorize pruning residues, promote circular economy practices, and diversify mushroom production systems in tropical regions.
