Abstract

Actually, respiratory tract infections are considered a serious public health problem, with bacteria being the main causal agent. Medicinal plants, such as black broom, could help treat these infections, which is why their study has gained strength. In the present work, oily extracts of leaf, flower, stem, and whole plant (W.H.) of black broom were obtained, using solvents of different polarities. The extracts were evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Microbiological analysis was performed using agar diffusion and MIC techniques. The leaf, flower, stem, and W.H. extracts showed inhibitory activity against S. aureus, the stem extracts gave positive results for A. baumannii, and the extract of W.H. showed activity for P. aeruginosa. The extraction solvent that gave the best results was acetone, while hexane and chloroform, to a lesser extent. The MIC ranged between 4 and 10 mg/mL. Concluding that the oily extracts from different parts of the plant, and the solvents used, present differences in terms of bacterial inhibition, establishing, in turn, that the black broom has potential for the treatment of respiratory tract infections caused by bacteria.
