Abstract

Fucoidan is a biologically active sulfated polysaccharide synthesized y brown alga (class Phaeophyceae).  To determine the concentration and properties of the fucoidan from Sargassum sinicola, six collections were made at various points along the coast of Sonora. The seaweeds were classified, washed and dried ((moisture content, 4%), ground, and sieved. The lipids and part of the pigments were extracted with ethanol. Subsequently, two methods were used for fucoidan extraction, the first (A) under acid conditions (0.1M HCl) and the second (B) under these conditions, and adding 0.1% formaldehyde final concentration, for bleaching purposes. Yields of 3.4±0.58% and 4.2±1.45% were obtained for A and B, respectively, with no significant difference (p>0.05) in the transparency parameter L* (56.80±5.47). However, Fourier transform infrared spectra showed that method B produced a desulfation of fucoidan, which was confirmed by observing a reduction in surface charge obtained by dynamic light scattering where the charge on fucoidan. Fucoidan extracted by method A had a surface charge of - 18±0.25 mv and that of B was -9.8 ±0.85 mV. The extraction method is important because some bioactivities of fucoidan depend on its degree of sulfation.
